Where to start with TypeScript

TypeScript sits on top of JavaScript, so your starting point depends on what you already know. If you write JavaScript every day, a short course will feel like new code rules you already understand. Complete beginners, however, end up learning two languages at once.

Most people who learn TypeScript online start with the type system itself. That means primitive types, interfaces, union types, and generics. After that, set up a tsconfig.json file and convert a small JavaScript project one file at a time. Your own code teaches more than any exercise, because the compiler points at mistakes you actually made.

Choose your TypeScript training based on the job you want. Frontend roles lean on React with TypeScript, while backend roles pair it with Node.js and Express. Harder type work, like conditional and mapped types, can wait until a project needs it.

Should you learn JavaScript before TypeScript?

Yes, and you need less of it than you might expect. TypeScript compiles to JavaScript, so every error you debug at runtime is a JavaScript error. Without the basics, telling a type problem from a logic problem gets hard fast.

Before you start a TypeScript course, get comfortable with variables, functions, arrays, objects, and async/await. Two to four weeks of daily practice usually covers it. Frameworks and build tools can come later. TypeScript also helps new learners, since the editor flags typos and wrong arguments before the code ever runs.

Where TypeScript can take you

Frontend and full-stack roles are the most direct path. Angular uses TypeScript by default, and new Next.js projects start with it too. GitHub’s Octoverse report also tied TypeScript’s growth to AI coding tools, which write more reliable code when types are in place.
